GRU has plenty of runway for an airliner. But CGH has a relatively short runway, so what matters there is what type of airliner you are on. If a turboprop, no problem. If a jet, you need to be sure you are with a reliable airline. The crash there was due to an airline trying to operate into the relatively short runway with a plane that had the reverse thrust inop due to a maintenance problem. It is OK to fly with thrust reversers inop, but only with a long runway.
