Hi,
Though your husband knows what he is doing as a pharmacist, that will give answer the question about whether you should be on meds. Benzo are supposed to be prescribed only after every other option has been tried and failed to produce results. Most therapists are of the opinion that progress is not possible when doing therapy if benzos are being used.
Why? A client needs to feel the full effect of whatever is distressing IN session so that the therapist's presence becomes linked to it and calms that issue's distress; that, when repeated, is internalized. Meds prevent that all important process. As to distress outside the session, if you know you are going to see your therapist at a specific day and time, you need to use that to hold on until then. If you cannot hold on, you need more sessions.
